I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Canadian TV is quite fun to watch. From Little Mosque on the Prairie commercials to the newscaster apologies in the form of “sorey” to the ‘McDoh-nalds doh-llar menu eh’ adverts, we Michiganders have all sorts of material from England and Canada to entertain ourselves with on the CBC network.

As most of you know (or are about to know), “Ho-key Neight in Canada” is a big deal. It’s apparently almost like watching football on Thanksgiving or taking your little son to baseball games. The commercials I see and blogs I read always imply that “hokey neight” is a major event. It’s the night where the guys gather around the TV, root for their favorite team and sweat it out until the end. If their team wins, it’s a serious ego booster. When their team loses, well… there’s always next week!

Growing up seeing these commercials never impacted me until a couple nights ago- when I got the sudden desire to watch a few minutes of this so-called grand and glorious sport.

So, the other night, I sat and I watched perhaps 30 or so men, (who looked more like heavily padded robotic red and white versions of Sasquatch); basically beat each other up on ice. At one point in the ten minutes I watched, three guys started beating on a fallen man with their hockey sticks! It was a battle to power, a fight to the finish- each team wanted to win very badly. I turned the channel in hopes of finding a somewhat calmer show to watch, such as the Greta lady on Fox or Rachel Maddow (I argue with her) on MSNBC.

My opinion: hockey is for men.

A couple nights later, my mom and I watched an ice dancing/skating showcase on the same channel. There was a beautiful performance to a romantic French song I am now playing on loop (“Je Suis Malade” or, “I Am Sick” – if you’re dying with curiousity) by a couple that skated expressively and rhythmically. The timing was perfect, the footwork carefully planned out in tune to the music. The crowd was on its feet by the end of the performance. I’d have to admit, I was made a bit silly by it, and it brought me back to my days as a ballerina dancing en pointe with other girls. I like that kind of stuff. It’s not violent, it looks pretty. :-)

The next day, I began re-reading “Wrestling Prayer” by Eric and Leslie Ludy. In it, they talk of the mighty Christians who “manned up” and fought the spiritual battles. The remarkable life of David shows that God’s power is indeed real and the element of death defying faith is reasonable. Too often, however, modern Christendom leans towards the softer stuff, the girly attitudes that leave Christians picking spiritual flowers and spraying spiritual perfume to cover up smelly odors.

My little noggin’s cogs began turning as I began to think about hockey (or ho-key if you’re Canadian or haa-key if you’re like me) and how it was more of a genuine struggle for power rather than a carefully thought out, always graceful dance.

While God’s rulebook has given us everything we need to know about “doing” church, there’s really no set way to perform church or a certain ritual we should actually follow. If you pray first or last, it doesn’t matter. Just pray. If someone wears red instead of pink on Easter, it doesn’t matter. Be modest. God gives us a model, but too often we make up our own rules and traditions in attempt to make church attractive and more doable.

In hockey, there is a set point in which the game starts and ends, rules to follow and a goal to meet. God gives us rules to follow(and principles to guide us otherwise) and a goal to work toward, but he doesn’t give us every single step to life all at once. Our job is to prepare for the “games” the enemy will play. We learn how to spiritually skate, stop, block, and defend; pad our behinds, elbows, and heads; all in hopes of being ready.

Hockey, much like life, is spontaneous. Just like players in a game, we don’t know if #5 on the enemy’s side will come and attack us with his stick at some point, or how many goals we’ll make. God knows, but how often do people wake up and think “Hooray! I’m going to get in a car accident and die today!” People make plans for the future and have expectations as to what they will do, but they can’t tell you where they will be walking at 11:32 am tomorrow.

As a Church worldwide and local, we don’t treat life and our congregation as such. We’ve made church into more of a dance. It’s all about being ready for performance. We train our people to perform well, but our performances often block out the true idea of Church:  fighting to win the lost and fighting against the Devil!

Too often we’re like girly ice skaters, floating through the same rituals and habits, trying to put on a good show instead of fighting for our best possible walk with the Lord. We care more about wearing our floaty costumes (i.e. “Men about 16 years old should wear ties until noon.” What, is the morning more holy than the afternoon?) than getting suited up for some kind of spiritual battle (Does anyone remember how to put on the full armor of God?).

We all chant the verse about God looking on the heart, and how our heart should be above reproach… but don’t we criticize others for “looking” funny? Today I was criticized by nearly a dozen women who told me I didn’t look very spring-y. Some told me I was wearing fall colors (grey skirt, periwinkle shirt) and white shoes before Memorial Day was a blunder. Does it matter, ladies?

Instead of looking good and acting good, how about just being good with the Spirit’s guidance? If we all read the Bible for it’s worth, we wouldn’t need dumb humanist rules. We would be more prepared to lead because we aren’t butting heads over whether or not we should take on a janitor or paint the bathrooms green. The Church, if everyone could realize the power of the Spirit, would be a much happier place. I’ll admit, I greatly dislike going to church. All I see are self-absorbed, happy, shiny people who sit in pews, hash out cash, and are bent on getting “their” way with everything. The minute you do things differently, (even things like using a different room), you are questioned about your motives. Every Sunday, it’s the same. Three hymns, a couple prayers, and a sermon (that never varies from the topic of salvation). It’s predictable as the sunrise! We don’t even think about what we’re doing… just as long as it looks good.

Imagine what power could be tapped if everyone pitched in and gave it their best- not for the sake of performing, but for the praise of Christ? What if everyone suddenly had the attitude of manning up in their spiritual life and devoted a passion for the truth to winning souls to Christ? We aren’t seeing lost people wander into churches nowadays- and if the lost were to sit in a pew and listen, none of the “get saved” jargon would make sense.

The Church, stuck in a different era, is still acting and training people for a world that is imagined to be an ice-skating rink… when the ideas and worldviews reinventing themselves today make the world to be more of a hockey rink.

So Christians, how about we stop caring about things that really don’t matter (like what so and so is wearing or where to set the flowers on Resurrection Sunday) and get back to things that do matter (like studying Church history, paying attention to intellectual thinkers, reciting the old creeds, and binding up the brokenhearted)? We should stop acting like little girls dancing around for fun on an ice rink and start fighting seriously like men on the hockey arena.

More thoughts on evangelical-soft-headed-ness to come. I’ve been thinking a lot about how ‘emotional‘ and ‘exciting‘ people make church and other religious experiences to be. I think it could all be attributed to the Great Awakening and the ideas that propelled it.

There is something about this chapter that draws me back to it over and over.

1. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This whole chapter tells us who we are as Christians. If I ever successfully lead someone to Christ, and they ask “Then what?” I would take them through a study of Romans 8 then Ephesians. Hey, now that my book is in oblivion, I could start writing a study on this…

Anyway. ahem. I’ve come to realize yet again the only way to be genuinely content, happy, and Christ-centered is when I’m not pursuing things I want.

I’ve been learning a lot about prayer recently, too; and the verse about the Holy Spirit making known our requyests without even saying them eloquently makes me want to burst with peace and assurance! Since we are saved to do good works, and we cannot lose our salvation; we should constantly be seeking things above. Sometimes, sin distracts us, though. It doesn’t take much to pull us away from Christ, but sadly, it happens. We become a little more carnally minded than we should. We fall into a great heap of trouble and see no way out. I am so thankful for a God who loves me, but hates my sin with a holy passion! He opens my eyes to breaches in my wall, to echo Nehemiah’s dilemma. I am determined to not let the wall of my fellowship Christ around crumble or be diminished by anything of the Father of lies.

That’s why I went through this process recently. Christ has become more real to me. I feel light, clean inside and out. :-) Even if you’re not a set-apart “girl,” you warriors could benefit from taking a step back and examining your life, too. We’re all human. We all sin. Princess or Warrior, lady or gent’a'man, I hope you click on the link and take a look at what “Cleaning Out the Sanctuary” really means.  :-) I dare you. Click on it!

Christianity vs. Islam

We’re going to compare Christianity with Islam, and see what “God” is like in each. I’ve read a ton on Islam, including the Qur’an, and I feel the need to share what I’ve learned. I made note of many verses that contradicted the Bible. Islam intrigues me- it makes me wonder why God allows Satan to make such a religion to grow, and who would take the time to think up a religion like this… it boggles my mind.

The first major difference we will notice is:

Christianity: Trinitarian Theism- or one God, three persons. 2 Cor. 13:4, Matt. 28:19 both refer to Son, Spirit, and Father. (If you know of more verses on the Trinity, let me know)

Islam: Unitarian Theism- in Surah 5:73 It says They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! Allah is the third of three; when there is no Allah save the One Allah. Perhaps the idea of the Trinity was too confusing for Muhammad. It confuses me too, but I believe it. It’s not illogical. What logic law does it violate?

The second major difference is:

God cannot lie or change-   James 1: 17: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no varying, neither shadow of turning.      Titus 1: 2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.

Allah lies and changes: Sura 8:30 They plot and plan, and Allah, too plans, but the best of the planners is Allah. Another translation uses “schemers” another, “plotters” and another “deceiver”. The word plotter seems to imply Allah is not all knowing.

Mondays and Fridays will be “VS.” days for now. Maybe not while I’m away in August, but definitely for now. I have no plans to make theme days, like blogs everywhere around me are doing. But it should be interesting. And if you are bored to tears, let me know somehting you’d like me to write about, and I’ll make a post just for you. :-)

Someone guessed the answer correctly (of the two of you that guessed!) :-) ENVY

Why I Stand With Israel

Below is a summary of what I mostly agree with about Christianity and Israel

http://www.jhm.org/Home/About/WhySupportIsrael

Below is an excellent presentation about Israel in the Bible. (Here, you have to click to advance through the show)

Sigh.

Why do I plan out a huge series, thinking I’m out of inspiration; then BAM! I get 10 post ideas in an hour? :-) Maybe confinement is good for the imagination. Maybe I don’t like boundaries. Maybe, the best stuff comes to you when you’re not looking for it. Perhaps I’m done with this series, though I may continue posting about some religions in the future. I really want to share what’s been pressed on my heart.

Anyway, today I’m covering what I like to call ‘the big three’. (Apparently, I grew up near Detroit, may it rest in peace)

Speaking of Detroit, let’s talk about its big religion:

Islam

Islam is the fastest growing religion- or so the experts claim. A few months ago, I was doing some demographics research and found from numerous sites that the birth rates in Muslim countries are falling. Perhaps the conversion rate is skyrocketing, and I could believe that. Walk around Ann Arbor and the Muslims aren’t olive skinned. They’re white. I don’t think they immigrated from Arabia or were born that way. Anywho…the estimated amount today is 1.66 billion Muslims in the world. (Imagine China as a star-and- crescent nation, and you’ve got 3/4 ish of the Muslims imagined)

History/ Founders

Islam has meant servant, submission, or surrender even before the Muslim world began. Learning Arabic, I learned it as a term for the people who follow Allah’s will and Muhammad’s teachings, and also as one of many words for surrender.

Back in the 600′s (AD), a 40 year old man named Muhammad claimed to start seeing visions. At first, he was sure these were from the devil, as they troubled him more than comforted him. Eventually he became convinced of God sending the visions, because the sights of torment could be a warning from a one true God. He also saw a place called Paradise, heard extra-special revelations from Gabriel the archangel, and began writing things down. In 622, he began a new religion, calling it Islam. Today, Muslims do not believe Muhammad was starting a new religion. Rather, he was just doing his job as the last of the great prophets (Adam and Jesus included in prophets).

It is believed that Muhammad began Islam to wipe out the idea of there being several gods, a problem in his time. Muslim scholars debate this, but still accept the religion- though it may have been “established” not “inspired”.

Muslims believe unitarian theism: one god, one person. No trinity- it confuses them.

They believe in angels and demons (jinn)

They belive in an afterlife.

They belive in judgment day.

There are five tenets to follow:

1. Faith in God “There is one God, His name is Allah, Muhammad is his prophet.” Say or read that sincerely, you become a Muslim.

2. Prayer facing Mecca five times a day

3. Giving to charity- usually 2-3% of income

4. Fasting during Ramadan

5. Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca)- to honor Muhammad’s life and reassurance of salvation

Books?

The Qur’an and Hadith- sayings and teachings of Muhammad

I’ve read both. You’ve got to be careful as a Christian, because it reads like the Bible. However, the creation account is rather funny to watch. Six days, eight days, six days… it goes back and forth.

Salvation?

Good life of obedience to teachings and/or jihad death

The Qur’an

Mormonism

This religion began with a confused Christian sick of denomination wars.

History/Founder

Joseph Smith was sick of all churches claiming to be right. He was also sick of the churches claiming all others were wrong.

So he prayed in earnest.

He got no answer.

He read Ephesians 4, reading about one faith, one Lord, one baptism…

And was even more confused and angst ridden.

Sigh.

After a long time of praying and being disgruntled about church, he had something to be ‘gruntled’ about (as opposed to disgruntled).

He came out of his depression and anger with the church and claimed he had an answer. An angel named Moroni, son of Mormon the great prophet, (though few have seemed to hear of him…) gave him a vision. He also claimed that Jesus Christ himself had appeared to him. The extra-special revelation? “All the churches are wrong, Joseph. Do not join them. I will help you start a church that is higher in authority. One that is not tainted with arguments…” Moroni revealed a truth of there being two golden plates with the fulness of the gospel written on them. Sure enough, a few months later, Mr. Smith claimed to have struck gold. They had what he called “egyptian writing” on them, and translated them using two stones provided for him.

The people of Joseph Smith’s town, (Palmyra, NY), hated the idea of a new religion. This fed his angst towards the church, so he packed up bags, moved to Illinois, received more visions, and was shot. Brigham Young took the podium for the late founder, and moved the growing people to Salt Lake City, Utah.

God?

God is a human who reached divinity. he has a physical body.

Jesus Christ: Separate from God, son of God (heavenly father) and Mary (heavenly mother)  from s3xual union. (Virgin birth? What’s that?)

Books?

Bible (if it’s a good translation), Book of Mormon (to explain the Bible), and The Doctrines and Covenants

Salvation?

Live a good life (temple marriage, baptism, honesty, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, completing a mission, and reading the books.

From this, we can conclude Mormon is polytheistic but they are quick to tell you it’s not. If God reached divinity, why can’t someone better boot him out??

Jehovah’s Witness

History/Founders

Charles Taze Russell (CTR) began this religion that now claims 6-7 million followers. Some other estimates claims as few as 2 millions, however. CTR didn’t like the doctrines of hell, so he formed his own ideas that eventually morphed into Jehovah’s Witness around 1870. (Seems a crude way to put it, but that’s basically what happened!!!)

His main goal was to get people to believe the wicked will be annihilated, not sent to hell. He also believed the death of Christ was a mistake, something that could be avoided. He felt God speaking to him one day, andlater announced the world would end in 1874. The year passed and the prophecy failed, CTR claimed the spiritual end had come.

In 1896, CTR and some friends began publishing a tract to prepare his followers and others for the world’s end in 1914. (sound like Harold Camping to you?!). He eventually died in 1916, after his second prophecy came not to pass.

The new leader, J. Rutherford came to the stand as the leader, immediately claiming the world would end in 1925. :-)

Rutherford also set plenty more dates, and the unweary followers went out with more zeal and pep to spread the word. Few people fell away, even through numerous errors.

God?

One person, the Trinity is a foolish idea, he is properly called JEHOVAH.

Jesus: Created by Jehovah, first, of all things. Not divine. Not eternal.

Books?

The Bible, New World Translation, rearranges and deletes phrases to make their doctrine real.

Salvation?

Christ’s death was unnecessary, no faith in him, just good works. Salvation can be lost through deep sin.

Let’s see what happens next, ladies and gentlemen!

Baha’i is a harder to understand religion, but keep these basic ideas and principles in mind:

The Founder(s) & Brief History

Baha’i started in 1844 when a shop owner in Iran declared himself “the gate” (or, Bab) to knowing God. He (rightfully) proclaimed life is meaningless with knowing or believing in God. Eventually, people looked at this man as being a sort of John the Baptist for a great person to come. The Bab went around claiming things that the Shah (Iran’s Muslim ”president” of sorts) didn’t like; so the Bab was executed at his command. After the Bab’s death, one of his closest friends and star disciple called himself the Bahu-allah (meaning glory of God) and wrote out all he had learned. People call him the Arabic equalivent of “messiah”. What Bahu-allah wrote about was the foundation of the Baha’i faith.

Who is God?

God is one person, reachable by many ways: Christianity, Islam, Judaism… the list goes on.  God cannot be known personally, one must ‘know’ God by acknowledging his existence and his ‘all-powerful-ness’ as they sometimes say. God created and controls all things, people, and events.

Do they have any books they follow/study/read, like Christianity’s Bible?

Yes- Baha’is are encouraged to read all books of all faiths, because all are right and all are worthwhile. However, each prophet’s book is considered less valuable than the one after- “Jesus’ Bible” would not be as revered as “Muhammad’s Qur’an”; and so on.

Their view of salvation:

All ways of religion lead to God, but the afterlife is not well-defined because the way to afterlife is not defined. Many ideas; mainly being the afterlife is a place of light, love, and rest.

Facts:

Baha’i members are quick to clarify that their religion is not an offshoot of Islam.

Baha’i is obessed with the number nine. Nine is the number of human manifestations of God. (Abram, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Bab, Bahu-allah). The Bahai temples/centers must have nine sides.

There are 19 days within the 19 months in their year, and every year lasts 361 days. Every 19th day, they have a party: reading Psalms, Buddhist writings, the Qur’an, the Hadith, etc; eating, praying, fellowshipp-ing. They usually meet at a member’s house for this “party” or “gathering” or even “feast”. Each local Bahai center is open every morning for prayer and fellowship; but Sunday is their day of worship, though they don’t have clergy.

Bahais advocate human service to others, living morally as all the different books say to, remaining free of drugs and prejudice, and having a great respect for all religions.

The “headquarters” are in Haifa, Israel.

Members:

A following in nearly every country on earth; estimated to be about 6.5-8 million people total.

Juche

Juche is the official “religion” of North Korea; if you live there, you are a member of that religion.

Founders/Brief history

Kim II Sung began the process of establishing Juche when he realized the negative influence of Russia and and China. He designed Juche to be taught in the schools as a way to promote himself and his politics. Anything that was pro-Russia or pro-China was chucked out the window. Sung kept a tight rein on things, urging his supprters to be self reliant and patriotic. Their creed has the gist of “support your leader and act well without any outside interference, we are supreme and your highest good”. However, I’d like to point out that North Korea has received quite a lot of aid from outside countries.

Who is God?

God does not exist, there is no religion. (Folowers of Juche don’t consider it to be a religion).

Books?

Communist writings and North Korean- patriotism (nationalism, for my Canadian readers :-) ) books are encouraged.

Salvation?

Death is not thought of, it is not a focus. There is no afterlife. When you die, you die.

Facts:

Most North Koreans do not follow Juche, only obey the laws required of them. To rebel in public could be a death or jail sentence.

New Year’s Day is celebrated as a fresh start for those not doing well in being good patriots (nationals :-) .

Adherents must religiously follow this non-religion… making it a religion in my book.

Speaking of adherents,  it is the population of North Korea:  23,906,070  (22-24 million)

Nation of Islam

A religion very different than Islam, yet has the same core.

You may know this religion better as “American Muslim Mission” (a term I’ve heard rather often on the news, growing up so near Detroit).

Founders/Brief History

The Nation of Islam is decidedly racist against whites. This group of people believe whites are inferior, worthless, and a force to be reckoned with. Jihad is used not against temptation, but their definition of evil: whites. To overcome white oppression or to die trying is glory and honor. To be looked down on is to fail. The Nation of Islam regard any white person as fair game to jihad. But how did this all begin- and why blacks?

A Detroit salesman with the last name of Farad really liked the writings of a Noble Ali- who thought the Islamic people were originally black. The faith was stolen by arabs and whites, and they used it to exploit blacks. So, Farad decided to do something about his new beliefs and started an organization for Muslim blacks. In a few years, Farad disappeared, and the group went under several leader changes over the next 50 years. Louis Farrkhan (the most recent leader) tried to bring The Nation of Islam back to the regular Islam, failing and causing tension within the group and eventually, a split. Now, the Nation of Islam is not so strong in Islam- it has allowed Communism “class struggle” in with the proliteriats being blacks and bourgeoisie being whites.

Differing from Islam:

Who is God?

Islam: God is Allah, never incarnate, one person, commands 5 five pillars of faith within the Qur’an. Allah sent prophets, Muhammad was the last and final one.

Nation of Islam: God’s name is Allah. Farad was Allah incarnate, committed to the 5 pillars, Allah is still sending prophets, the last one was Elijah Muhammad (one great leader of the Nation of Islam)

Books?

The Qur’an

Salvation?

Death in jihad, believing in the prophets. They call Farad’s birthday (Feb. 26th) ’Savior’s Day’, but they view it as savior of the black people, not black people’s souls.

Facts:

Nation of Islam has 60-100 thousand followers (estimated)

Malcolm X was a leader/main figure in the group.

They focus mostly on reaching blacks who are descendants of slaves, not so much as ‘real’ Africans.

On a more devotional note:

I’ve been thinking a lot about being humble in your words (even typing them on your keyboard or phone); being gracious in your words, and being ’smart’ in your words. (All three I could really work on improving)

Then, I looked back at one of my earliest posts and found this article I had written two years ago.  (I’ve been blogging for almost two years, now! Yay!)

http://echoesinthewind.wordpress.com/2009/09/19/say-what/

Also, I can’t believe I forgot Israel’s ‘birthday’ on Tuesday. I even had it on my calendar! This Sunday, to make up for it, I’ll have to wear blue and white and run around the yard with my flag :-) . I was going to do a post :-( !!!!!

What some poeple are inclined to believe is beyond me. Why some poeple could believe what they believe is confusing to me. It beats logic. It may be beyond you as well.

So let’s study together.

Let’s talk about some of the famous and some of the lesser known religions around the world. Though cult-like by nature, many of these groups/movements are religious. Some are outright funny sounding, some are angst riddled, some are enforced. Fact: Man-kind is religious. We will worship something or someone; even ourselves. We can’t get away from that fact. Everywhere we turn, we can choose to worship something other than God. By choosing not to worship anything, we worship ourselves.

If you’ve read my blog for any amount of time, you’ll know I LOVE studying other viewpoints, analyzing things, investigating people’s ideas. Do not worry, I will occasionally post a poem or a devotional type article along the way. My blog is for the purpose of encouragement, this series is to encourage you to keep your faith- keep sharing your faith. I won’t be talking about Christianity’s views- you should know already what that is like!

We’ll look at the founder, the view of God, view of man, salvation/afterlife, and canons/texts/books/traditions in each one. I’ll also share examples of members of these religions- giving you a better idea where these people are coming from. Also, I’ll share how many people are estimated to identify themselves as belonging to that religion.

I hope you’ll stay around! This will be fun, I promise!

A preliminary list of religions I’m posting about in no particular order:

Catholicism

Rastafarian Movement

Juche

Asatru

Cao Dai

Kabbalah

Nation of Islam

Shinto

Universism

Vodoo

Mormonism

Judaism

Osho

Sai Baba

Deism

Tenrikyo

Druidry

Confucianism

Gnosticism

Jehovah’s Witness

The Prince Philip Movement ( I found this odd faith through my stats- someone googled ‘church fellowship ideas for philip worshippers’)

Lastthursdayism

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

Those last three will be trip. Seriously, it will. If you know of a world religion not mentioned, by all means, speak up. I have plenty of others I am still studying, but who knows, I’m human. I forget some things.

If you’ve ever seen the show AFV, you’ll know that there can be some real weirdos in America.

Take, for instance, a little boy. His father was filming him having a temper tantrum. The kid screamed and screamed- and the father turned his back, filming the floor behind him… and the crying stopped! Stopped, that is, until the little boy crawled in front of the camera again, looked in the lens and started crying again. So, the father wisely ignored him and walked to the kitchen. The crying stopped. The whining silenced. Silenced, that is, until the little boy scampered in front of the camera, dropped down on his chubby behind and let out a wail. It was downright horrifying- and hilarious to see. The boy was probably no more than 2.

Let’s talk about sin nature. We have it, there’s no denying it- though the hooligans in West Side Story claim “deep down inside us there is good…”. Everyone must come to the conclusion we are sinful. (Don’t worry, the hooligans eventually sing of  ”deep down inside we’re no good… no earthly good” :-) ) Of course, there are those who say our “erred” way of life can be perfected in human means… but we’re not going to talk about them.

Have you ever dealt with a baby that cried until you gave it what it wanted? Selfishness! Or a toddler who wanted a toy, so he grabbed it from his mate before you could say boo? Nobody had to teach them how to conive!

Imagine if we had to send little tykes off to lying school? No! (Funny- “Did you take the cookie?” “Yes!” “No- you’re supposed to say NO! NO NO NO NO! Will you ever learn?”)

Ever wonder what Sunday School is for? Or church? Or family worship? Or parents? We have to be taught to be GOOD.  It doesn’t come naturally.

Jeremiah 17:9- The heart is deceitful above all else, and desperately wicked- who can know it?

Below is Doug Phillip’s excellent response to Earth Day. But first, one interesting fact you may be delighted to know of:

The UN posted a quote on their site a number of years ago, claiming that by the end of 2010, there would be 50 million global warming refugees worldwide. Sounds funny, right? Well, they took that off their website a few weeks ago, because it obviously has not happened. :-D What does that tell you?

On to the Christian’s response to Earth Day…

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse
(Romans 1:20)

A Christian Response to Earth Day

All men are religious because all men have an object of worship. All men have faith in something. In the end, men will either worship and serve the creature, or they will worship and serve the Creator. But they will worship something.

In the 18th century, many began to worship the mind. The religion of that day was rationalism. In the 19th century, this god morphed into scientism. But science failed to provide the answers to ultimate questions. The men of the 20th century looked for a more immediate solution to the problems of humanity — they chose to worship the State. This failed. Statism proved to be a harsh taskmaster. In the absence of any real solutions from rationalism, scientism, and statism, men fixed their attention on a new god — or rather, an ancient God that just needed a new facelift.

That god is the earth.

21st-century men are earth worshippers. They are sanitized pantheists. Of course, they don’t call themselves pantheists or earth worshippers, but religious devotion to the material world is the essence of this modern faith.

This religious devotion to the material world as god comes in many shapes and sizes, but it has become ubiquitous in our culture. The new pantheism is at the heart of the green movement. It is reflected in the priorities of Hollywood, in the agenda of politicians, and in the curriculums of the government schools. It is found in the marketing campaign of Madison Avenue, in the reality TV shows of cable television, and sadly, even in pulpits across the nation. The worship of the creation has become a defining undercurrent in our culture, even as it is reshaping many of the cultures of the modern world.

And this is one reason why this Friday, April 22, millions of people (perhaps billions) representing the countries of the United Nations will stop to celebrate the high holy day of this religion as they pay homage to the earth God. Of Earth Day, evolutionary anthropologist Margaret Meade once explained that:

EARTH DAY is the first holy day which transcends all national borders, yet preserves all geographical integrities, spans mountains and oceans and time belts, and yet brings people all over the world into one resonating accord, is devoted to the preservation of the harmony in nature and yet draws upon the triumphs of technology, the measurement of time, and instantaneous communication through space. EARTH DAY draws on astronomical phenomena in a new way — which is also the most ancient way — by using the vernal Equinox, the time when the Sun crosses the equator making the length of night and day equal in all parts of the earth. To this point in the annual calendar, EARTH DAY attaches no local or divisive set of symbols, no statement of the truth or superiority of one way of life over another.Should Christians care about the earth? Not only must we care about it, we have a holy duty to engage the earth. The difference between the objectives of biblical Christianity and radical environmentalism can be found in the religious assumptions of both groups.

Four Lies of the Radical Environmentalist Movement
With Earth Day comes billions of dollars worth of environmentalist propaganda driven by their religious worldview. Some of the themes you can expect to hear repeated this year include the following:

  1. The Earth Is Our Mother: The very expression “Mother Earth” is popular parlance in our culture and reflects the old pagan longing to worship the physical world. Modern environmentalists, with their devotion to the idea that man is just another life-form to spring from the womb of the earth on the evolutionary journey of life, speak openly about earth being the mother of man.
  2. Human Life Has No Greater Intrinsic Value Than Animal Life: The notion that man is an insignificant blip in the universe and that our planet is almost as insignificant as man is an oft-repeated concept of the modern environmentalist movement. Radical environmentalists complain about the carbon footprints of humans, and the sin of “Speciesism” — man discriminating against lower life-forms.
  3. The Greatest Crisis Facing Humans is the Despoiling of the Earth: From the media campaigns of former Vice President Al Gore, to the film agenda of Avatar, radical environmentalists want you to believe that the single greatest problem facing humanity is the environmental destruction of earth.
  4. Absent a Radical Shift in Private Practice and Public Policy, the Environmental Crisis Will Lead to the End of Life on Earth: Modern pantheists care deeply about the future. One thing is clear: Radical envioronmentalists have their own eschatology. They see the end of the world coming because of nuclear waste, global warming, the loss of rainforest in the Amazon, or any of a host of perceived environmental hazards.

Four Christian Assumptions About the Earth

  1. The Earth is Witness to the Power and Authority of God the Creator Who Alone May Be Worshipped: The Bible teaches that the very existence of the earth is a reminder to all men of the eternal power and Godhood of Christ, so that they are without excuse (Romans 1:20). It reminds us that as long as the earth continues, the promises of God will remain faithful (Genesis 8:22; Deuteronomy 7:9). Significantly, the Bible warns us that the consequence for man rejecting the witness of creation is that he worships creation itself (Romans 1:22-25).
  2. The Earth Was Made for the Glory of God and the Benefit of Man Who Was Made the Pinnacle of Creation and of Infinitely Greater Value than Animals or the Earth Itself: Man is the pinnacle of creation and has more eternal value than the earth or any of the creatures who live on it (Psalm 8:5). Man is not a carbon footprint; he is the image-bearer of God. This means that the most “insignificant” human life (insignificant only in the eyes of man) is of inestimably greater value than that of a blue whale, a snail darter, a spotted owl, a mountain, or a tree.
  3. The Earth Has Been Placed under Man who Has a Moral Obligation to Subdue it and to Exercise Wise Stewardship over the Earth: Man is God’s appointed steward on earth, and his core mission is to be His agent of dominion over it. Toward this end, God has placed all things under man to be used for his benefit and to be carefully stewarded and cultivated for God’s glory. “Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet” (Psalm 8:6).
  4. The Earth is Not the Problem: The reason why the earth suffers is because of man’s sin that has plunged the earth into judgment. Man brought death and judgment to earth. In fact, the whole creation is groaning and waiting redemption (Romans 8:22-23). Despite the righteous judgment of God on earth, He is merciful and promises the continuation of the seasons and the fundamental stability of the planet until the end of time (Genesis 8:22), at which there will be a new heaven and new earth (2 Peter 3:13)

Conclusion

All men are religious because all men have an object of worship. In the end, they will worship and serve the creature, or they will worship and serve the Creator. But they will worship something.

Earth Day, and the radical environmental movement that spawned this high holy day of pantheism, are at war with the Gospel because they perpetuate false worship. The Christian response to the idolatry of Earth Day might be reduced to this simple thought: Jesus Christ is the Creator, and He alone is to be worshipped. He created man as the pinnacle of creation and determined that humans would be the only part of creation to be made in the very image of God, and that man as the image-bearer of God would rule over the earth.

On a practical level, this means that Christians need to stop allowing the radical environmentalist movement to define the issue. We must cease from being the tail and become the head on the question of our duties, privileges, and responsibilities vis-a-vis creation. The Bible has a great deal to say about our use of the resources of the world and our relationship to the earth. Of all people, Christians who honor the Creator should have a passion for creation. We are losing the debate through subversion, silence, lack of vision, and because of the Christian community’s fear of the God-ordained, perpetually valid, creation precept called “The Dominion Mandate.” This mandate directs man is to rule over the earth, subduing it and taking dominion over it for his benefit and for God’s glory. Implicit to the Dominion Mandate is the duty of man to cultivate, wisely manag e, and carefully steward the planet.

Finally, man’s problems will never be solved through the elevation of human reason, the power of science, or the interventions of the state. Nor will rescuing the biosphere of planet earth save man or ensure him a future on this planet. You cannot save the earth. But human beings can be saved. And the only hope of salvation is found in Jesus Christ — the Creator! It is this Creator through whom we live and breathe and who by the very power of His word holds the worlds together. He will someday establish a new heaven and a new earth and will bring all of His people into Glory.

“Legalism is merely the futile attempt to do in our own strength what the Spirit of God means to accomplish on our own behalf.” ~ Leslie Ludy Set Apart Femininity

The form in which ideas are expressed affects what those ideas will be. (The MEDIUM is the METAPHOR) ~ Neil Postman Amusing Ourselves To Death

If you asked 2o good men today what they though was the highest of the virtues, 19 of them would reply, Unselfishness. But if you had asked almost any of the great Christains of old, he would have replied, Love. You see what has happened? A negative term has been substituted for a positive, and this is of more than philosophical importance. The negative idea of Unselfishness carries with it the suggestion not of primarily of securing good things for others, but of going without them ourselves, as if our abstinence and not their happiness was the important point. I do not think this is the Christian view of Love. The New Testament has lots to say about self-denial, but not about self-denial as an end in itself.  ~ CS Lewis, The Weight of Glory

It is a sin to be dumb! ~ John Stonestreet- Summit lecture

A real woman is a woman who recognizes that she has been exquisitely and perfectly created by a loving God for a unique purpose. Out of geniune gratitude, awe and a desire to please her Maker, a real woman joyfully embraces her femininity and submits every aspect of her identy to God’s original and unique design for her…Unlike feminists, we know God’s design for women. This gives us the upper hand. Will we use it? ~ Elizabeth Botkin So Much More

America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within. ~ Josef Stalin (from the opening of the documentary, Agenda) And what’s happening in our world???

The flood of rampant homosexuality will not ruin a nation. Why? Because rampant homosexuality is a sign that the nation is already ruined! ~ John Stonstreet Summit lecture

Godly womanhood, the very plance sounds strange in our ears. We never hear it now. We hear about every other type of woman: beautiful women, smart women, sophisticated women, career women, talented women, divorced women. But seldom do we hear of godly women- or of a godly man either, for that matter. We believe women come nearer to fulfilling their God-given funtion in the home than anywhere else. It is a much nobler thing to be a good wife, than to be Miss America. It is a greater acheivement to establish a Christian home than it is to produce a second rate novel filled with filth. It is a far, far better thing in the realms of morals to be old fashioned, than to be ultra modern, The world has enough womee who know how to be smart. It needs women who are willing to be simple. The world has enough women who know how to be brilliant. It needs some who will be brave. The world has enough women who are popular. It needs women who are pure. We need women, and men too, who would rather be morally right than socially correct. ~ Peter Marshall

When God’s Spirit is given His rightful place in a young woman’s life, He transforms her personality to reflect His beauty… He can overtake any kind of personality. . .You decrease, so that He might increase…~  Leslie Ludy The Lost Art of True Beauty      (This book was a great book for me. I tend towards shy, and for the first time, I realized I could go outside of myself- types are just types… but I recently went to http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp to take a personality test anyway. The test revealed my weaknesses and strengths. I am an INTJ – Which type are you?)

The Baha’i faith believes in one God, but there are many ways to seek/experience God. Minimize theological differences and work together for harmony of faiths, freeing slaves and seeking justice. Affirmative action. Socail Justice. Service to humanity is highest goal. Baha’i believes in one God in one person- unitarian theism- it’s roots are in Islam, but they also accept YAH, Jesus, and Brahma as the same person- these are just other names. ~Len Woods      (Is the new Zach Hunter “Be the Change” movement founded in Baha’i? Whether he knows it or not, unknowingly, yes. The affirmative action movement is combining various religions to do things in God’s name. Is there a way to do hard things the wrong way? Yes! Baha’i followers will be among those to whom God will say “Depart… I never knew you…” Pluralism is one of the worst of the false worldviews).

To understand reality is not the same as to know about outward event. The best informed man is not necessarily the wisest. The wise man will seek to acquire the best knowledge- to recognize the significance in the factual is wisdom. ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer (He is a good writer, and I like his “Cost of Discipleship”, though his theology on salvation was messed up…)

“We live in a dictatorship of relativism… what people say and do becomes normal, but not right.” ~Scott Klusendorf.

Ideas have history, they come from somewhere. Ideas have feet, they will go somewhere. Ideas have consequences: they will do something to you or for you. Doc Noebel

If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out it has no meaning. Just as if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would have no meaning. ~ CS Lewis

In the world it is called Tolerance, but in hell it is called Despair. The sin that believes in nothing cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, remains for nothing, and has nothing for which it will live for or die. ~Dorothy Sayers (Sounds like Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World- a place so hedonist and so limited by… love)

This so-called tolerance is nothing but a huge indifference.  ~Alexis de Tocqueville

“We are all part of one. Intellect is error…” ~Bhagwhan Shree Rajneesh - (Haha If we are all part of ‘one’, how did we get away from that oneness into many religions? Just asking, Mr. Rajneesh)

Sloppy language makes sloppy thought possible. ~Michael Bauman

Be the first you, not the second me. Education is learning to think, indoctrination is teaching you how to think. ~Michael Bauman.

The probability of life originating from an accident is comparable to the probability of the unabridged dictionary resulting from an explosion in a print shop. ~ Edwin Conklin

He that knows nothing will believe anything.

If God wants to use you, he wants to use the real you. Not the person you want to be. God doesn’t use imaginary people. He wants you to be who He made you. Christians should not feel guilty by this… they are fogiven. What we feel is conviction.  Rowan Gillson (IPS)
